How can we make our School Canteen more sustainable?
Sustainable Food: The Year 8 students focused on making the school lunch more sustainable. Taking the idea that we can all help the planet by reducing waste, they worked hard to find how this could apply locally to our own canteen, finding out what issues and parameters exist, and came up with possible solutions to present to the school management team. They learned about the budgetary and statutory requirements of school food and surveyed student groups to find their likes and dislikes. They engaged with a local food waste reduction NGO, "Free-Food", and brainstormed ideas to increase the uptake of the food currently on offer. Their presentation was a whole year group effort that culminated with a video presentation, posters aimed at reducing waste, potential menus and fun names for the dishes and suggestions as well as the preparation for possible new options.
