Did you know that when we start to laugh, some physical changes in our body are induced? Laughter stimulates the heart, lungs and muscles and enhances the intake of oxygen-rich air. It also soothes tension and aids muscle relaxation. Even when you are in a bad mood, there are techniques that can instantly make you feel happier. Watching funny shows and movies, playing fun games with your friends are very well known, but here are two additional tips which are probably new to you;
- Fake a smile
Even if you just make the physical shape with your mouth, it could trick your brain into happiness. According to facial feedback hypothesis (Paul Ekman, 1983), our facial expressions affect our emotions. They send muscular signals to the brain, making us feel emotions corresponding to the expressions. Therefore, if you do not want to feel unhappy, stop frowning.
- Laughter yoga
Laughter yoga is a relatively new concept in body-mind exercise. It combines simulated laughter exercises with gentle breathing techniques to teach the body how to laugh without relying on jokes or humour. It is based on assumption that laughter is visually contagious regardless of how humorous something is. Share the idea with your friends and enjoy!
